Windows Vista is finally here - it launches in Singapore today.
I just decided to blog this for those who are still unfamiliar with this "important event".
A research study released by International Data Corporation (IDC) and commissioned by Microsoft Corp tells us that "Windows Vista will provide a foundation for the information technology market moving forward, creating more than 100,000 new jobs and driving $70 billion or more in revenues for Microsoft’s partners and the computer industry at large".
Just because of a release of a new operating system, there is significant economic impact. Astounding. (Of course the accuracy of the study may be questioned and it is commissioned by Microsoft, but definitely, there will be new jobs created due to Vista's launch.)
Anyway Im not getting Vista anytime soon; its still full of bugs. (In my opinion.) And it is pretty expensive, at around US$239 for a Home Premium. It is preferable that one waits till the end of the year when more bugs are fixed. Also, it needs 2GB of RAM to run well. Vista occupies roughly three times more space than Windows XP. In fact, it'll require up to a whopping seven gigabytes of drive space.
In the screenshot below, notice the paging file size: Vista uses about 820MB. If you want to see how XP compares, go to the task manager in Windows XP and click the Performance tab. Therefore, to upgrade to Vista, you would definitely need to buy more memory... and more money goes into the hands of memory manufacturers.
I guess all this memory is also needed to run the new Aero Glass Effects after all. The Youtube video below shows the new Aero Glass Effects and the interface.
If you notice (and most people have already), the "Start" button has been replaced by a Windows Logo, similar to Apple's Mac. Microsoft was probaly tired of the old joke whereby one had to start in order to shut down.
Regardless of the new features including improved security, I think it would be best to wait for the bugs to be fixed before you buy a copy of Vista. And of course, you'll have buy some new hardware since Vista is very demanding on your computer.
Anyway, lets hope all the bugs in Vista will be solved soon. (:
